A Blank Screen - A Set of Rules - Welcome to artworkornetwork - Part of Rules of the Game

The artworkornetwork screen is installed at the entrance to Surface Gallery and will be visible during all 5 of the exhibitions which make up
Rules of the Game, 19th April - 19th May.

At the start of the exhibition the screen was 'blank' a space divided up into 8,170 rectangles. As visitors to the gallery take one of the postcards, located next to the screen, and follow the Rules/instructions, they begin to change the image on the screen by 'occupying' the empty rectangles.

They then invite 5 of their friends to take part as well, and then invite 5 of their friends.....

These "social connections' begin to reflect those which are part of the series of openings. Artists exhibiting in each of the 5 exhibitions invite their friends to their opening reception - these people might then tell their friends about what they have seen.

There will be an overlap of connections between each of the people who attend the 5 opening receptions. Some people see the artworkornetwork screen each time. Some will ignore it each time.

Below are images from each of the exhibition openings - some of these people have followed the Rules of the Game and started the 'spread' of artworkornetwork.

Exhibition 2 - Burning Holes. 24 - 28th April 2007

The second exhibition, Burning Holes, opened on Tuesday April 24th.

Co-curated by Chie Hosaka & Hugh Dichmont. Including work by Ben Hargrave, Harriet Kerrs, Lauren O’ Grady, Laura Taylor, Elizabeth Teasdale and Daniel Warren.

The exhibition presents a series of miniature worlds that plunge the viewer into the realm of childhood, changing the rules of the gallery by shrinking the audience perspective to the space and the work on show.

Exhibition 1 - Spectacles. 19th - 21st Aptil 2007

The fist exhibition, Spectacles, opened on Thursday April 19th.
Curated by, and including work by Matthew Cooper, Samuel Mercer and Hannah Phillips.

Different practices collide and negotiate for territory in a collaborative, interactive and performative exhibition that draws on ideas of competition and control. The audience is directed through a one way system, removing the common route of negotiating the Gallery Space.
During the opening event, visitors were able to take postcards, with instructions on how to participate in artworkornetwork, explore the Spectacles environment, using the provided 'viewers', and follow Matthew Cooper's on-site work/perfomance.
